New Year New Me: 2021 Lighting Trends

A new year automatically brings about the desire for change. And when considering how much time people spent in their homes last year, it’s not surprising that many of us are seeking a refresh of our home’s interior. Changing something as simple as your lighting can have a dramatic effect on your overall atmosphere.

Lighting can affect our emotions, mood and appetite. When adequate lighting is present, we tend to be happier and more productive. It is not motivating to work, study or cook in a space with dim or unbalanced lighting.

In light of this (no pun intended), we’ve compiled a list of current interior lighting trends to help you make the right change or upgrade to your home’s interior lighting design.

Geometric Shapes

Geometric shapes are all the rage when it comes to trendy lighting solutions. Triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids are making an appearance in a wide range of home design plans across the board.

Whether they are a part of interior lighting in a simple or complex way, they instantly become a statement piece. You might find some light fixtures that are minimalist in design and colour, utilizing the simplistic straight lines of these geometric shapes beautifully. Other lighting solutions will be more extravagant, with numerous geometric shapes and shiny finishes combined to achieve a more dramatic effect.

Material Combinations

Materials and finishes are some of the most important aspects of interior design, where illumination is required to truly appreciate these aspects. This is why the combination of various materials within a single lighting solution is a popular approach these days.

Light fixtures with contrasting materials (such as modern steel and distressed wood) can deliver an unexpected and fresh look. Lighting may also combine sleek color pallets with traditional finishes, while others may combine two finishes with the same tone but different textures.

Mixing materials when it comes to light fixtures allows decorative styles and eras to be blended harmoniously.

Horizontal Lights

Horizontal lighting truly floods your interior space with light. Traditionally, this lighting was used in industrial settings, such as warehouse-style lofts. Today, you can find horizontal lighting catered to many styles and designed for every room in your house.

Horizontal light fixtures create a linear look by capturing the concepts of balance and proportion perfectly. Lines help define where spaces start and finish — and when this space is filled with a gorgeous lighting solution, the result is stunning.

This new modern lighting trend is not limited to only horizontal lines. There are many light fixtures on the market that utilize vertical lines that imaginatively incorporate another dimension. Other lighting solutions utilize diagonal lines to create a slightly more disruptive feel.

Pendant Chandeliers

Traditionally, a chandelier was one type of light fixture and a pendant was another. A current popular trend right now is the emergence of pendant chandeliers, which combine the best of both worlds. Pendant chandeliers are often used in entryways, kitchens and dining rooms.

It has also become increasingly popular to cluster more than one pendant chandelier together (for example, placing one over an island to achieve a different effect).

Matte Black Colours

Black is back — and it will bring a chic and edgy look to your home’s interior. Matte black is a clean and neutral base that is showing up in light fixtures in many exciting ways. These fixtures will often have a high contrast result, making a significant impact on the look and feel of your space.
